There's a teeny, tiny person who lives in my head that tries to tell me that I have to be a good girl so that God will love me. If that person would ever show his face, I would squash him like a bug. Instead, I just try to turn down the volume.
God so loved the world that he sent his one and only son, that whosoever believes in him, would not perish but have everlasting life.
I won't even cite that verse because everyone knows it (especially if you have ever watched a televised football game and seen people hold up posters in the end zone with this passage cited on it...)
When we were talking about this verse with the rehab ladies on Monday, I said, "Everyone has heard this verse, but I wish they were as familiar with the one that comes after it!"
For God didn't send his son into the world to condemn the world, but that the world might be saved through him.
One of my teaching points on Monday was God offers us love that embraces. "What's an embrace?" I asked. A hug, several of the ladies responded . "That's right. God doesn't do air kisses and say in a sing-songy voice, Love ya too! No, he holds us as tight as he can, puts his mouth as close to our ear as he can, and whispers 'I love you.'"
Not, I love you when you are good
Or, I love you when you are working for my kingdom
Or, I love you when you read your Bible and pray and go to church.
No, just, I love you!! It's a Big Love (and I'm NOT talking about that hideous show on HBO)
Have you ever experienced that kind of love?
Don't position God's love as a conditional, air kiss kind of love. When you do, you're not just selling God short, you're selling yourself short.
And don't be one of those people who never hugs back, either! Stay in love with God. It's just that simple.
